Our aim: to protect the skin and respect the environment
Certain UV filters used in sun creams are suspected to damage corals and fish (in addition to other causes). The substances dissolve in water and coat the corals like an invisible film. They thus cause so-called coral bleaching. If the bleaching continues for longer periods, the corals die off entirely. A quarter of all fish species in our oceans live in coral reefs. As a result of coral bleaching, the fish leave their habitat.
In response, Hawaii was the first US federal state to pass a law banning the sale of sun protection products containing the UV filters oxybenzone (benzophenone 3) and octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate). This law comes into effect on 1 January 2021.
None of Louis Widmer’s sun care preparations contain oxybenzone (benzophenone 3) or octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate). They therefore fully comply with the Hawaiian reef bill.
Both plastics are generally solid, artificial, non-water-soluble polymers. Polymers are large molecules consisting of many identical small molecules. They are synthetically manufactured, come in solid, liquid or gel-like form and have a multitude of uses in modern life. But polymers also occur entirely naturally, in the form of proteins, sugar, fat or carbohydrates, for instance.
Microplastics are solid particles made from plastic that are smaller than 5 mm. They do not biologically degrade in water.
98% of all Louis Widmer products today do not contain any solid microplastic particles. We are in the process of reformulating the remaining products.
Liquid polymers are large molecules consisting of many identical small molecules. Some cosmetic products contain liquid polymers. they cannot be classed as plastic as plastic is defined as a solid material. They also are not part of the water pollution problem. Although they are not easily biologically degradable, they can be removed by the technologies in waste water plants (e.g. by using flocculants). We are unaware of any scientific studies that report environmental damage caused by these substances.
