Louis-Edouard Widmer and his son Louis-Max Widmer devised this slogan when they set up Louis Widmer SA in September 1960. And yet why did they dedicate their life’s work to the skin? The founders of the company were fascinated by the unique complexity of the largest human organ and its innumerable elementary functions, a fascination that still characterises the entire company today and finds expression again and again in innovative products for the skin.
Quality from cure to care. From cleansing and skincare right through to medical preparations, Louis Widmer ensures optimum effectiveness and excellent tolerability. History has shown that the quality philosophy of Louis Widmer has not lost any of its topicality; the essentials have been preserved over decades.
At the same time, Louis Widmer has consistently used state of the art means to improve quality and allow new findings to be incorporated. The ultimate in quality, maximum possible effectiveness and optimum tolerability by the skin – the original credo is still lived and breathed in Schlieren to this day and facilitates the development of care products that have received awards for Louis Widmer.
By 1960, Louis-Edouard Widmer and his son Louis-Max Widmer had already acquired extensive knowledge and experience of the international cosmetics business through their previous work. They were successful – yet something was missing. Over the years, they began to develop a vision and soon became convinced of one thing. They would only be able to make that vision a reality by setting up their own company. In 1960 it was time to act. With the founding of Louis Widmer + Co in Uitikon near Zurich, the corner stone for today's Louis Widmer SA was laid.
Their shared vision was initially to develop a product line incorporating the latest scientific findings in the field of dermatology about healthy and unhealthy skin that also took account of the ageing process. Through their company, the father and son team wanted to bring effective products to the market that "serve their purpose perfectly and are extremely well tolerated".
They were fully aware that it would not be easy to keep applying the latest findings about skin, skincare, nutrition, protection and healing to new and improved products. But they vowed to devote all their efforts to realising this vision. Their motto was: "A life dedicated to skin". But why dedicate a life's work to the skin? Louis Widmer was fascinated by the unique complexity of the largest human organ and the many essential functions it performs. The skin protects the body not only from mechanical, chemical and thermal effects and damage, but also from many germs. It acts as a temperature regulator and is important for maintaining water balance. It is a sensory organ for love, tenderness, pain, pressure and temperature. Moreover, when our cheeks blush, our pallor drops or our hair stands on end, it also acts as a communication medium and is very important in aesthetic terms to the way we appear to others.
All Louis Widmer products are manufactured according to the guidelines for pharmaceutical products and are subject to the most stringent quality standards and controls. The process begins with the raw materials. Purity and content must meet the highest requirements. Production has been carried out for ten years in so-called clean rooms with purified compressed air and cutting-edge technology. Thanks to this sterile environment, the use of preservatives can be kept to a minimum – and this makes the products even more widely tolerated.
Before any product reaches the shops, it is subjected to detailed chemical, analytical and microbiological tests. With these three pillars - perfect quality raw materials, the latest technology and extensive control processes - Louis Widmer ensures its products are of the highest quality. Another important part of quality assurance, which has been the hallmark of Louis Widmer since its inception, is to keep its production headquarters in Switzerland.
Since its foundation, Louis Widmer has been famous for one quality in particular - the courage to be independent. Management and employees have always had the courage and the faith to follow their own path. This family business is firmly convinced that even in these turbulent times of takeovers and mergers, companies that offer useful, high-quality products and excellent customer service will always succeed in the long term. To ensure this happens, Louis Widmer has always insisted on maintaining its independence and putting the quality of its products before short-term gain.
