Why is sun protection so important?

UV rays are not always equally strong. While in the spring months a light protection is still sufficient, the UV rays from May to August are very intense.

The majority of these rays are long-wave UVA rays, which penetrate into deeper skin layers even through window glass. They attack the support system of collagen and elastin and accelerate the skin ageing process as well as the formation of wrinkles and pigment spots.

The high-energy UVB rays, on the other hand, only penetrate the uppermost layer of the skin, the epidermis. Here they have a particularly intense effect due to reflection, especially in water, on concrete and in snow, and can cause painful sunburns.

Choosing the right sun protection factor

When sunbathing, it is important to use sufficient cream and select the right sun protection factor for your skin type. Sun cream with too low sun protection factor does not protect your skin sufficiently and can lead very quickly to serious sunburns.

First step in finding your suitable protection factor is to identify your skin type. Why? Because every person has his/her own natural protection against UV rays. This depends on your personal skin type. Generally speaking, people with very pale skin are naturally protected for about 5 to 10 minutes, while dark-skinned people can stay protected for up to 90 minutes.
