Committed to sustainability
Leave the smallest possible footprint on the environment! Since it was founded in 1960, Louis Widmer has been tirelessly committed to sustainability. Responsibility towards people and the environment shapes the entire corporate culture and vision.
With “Committed to Care”, Louis Widmer is anchoring the sustainability pledge at all company levels. This comprises six areas – from the value-creation chain to treatment of employees, to engagement inside and outside the company. The high demands we place on our products and processes also apply to their sustainability.
1. Clean Beauty
Louis Widmer is committed to responsible product development with consideration for people, animals and the environment. The Louis Widmer Clean Beauty concept combines carefully selected ingredients with scientifically substantiated development and responsible formulation principles. Products displaying this claim contain no intentionally added silicone-based or mineral oil-derived ingredients and fulfil the Louis Widmer Clean Beauty Microplastics Criterion. Louis Widmer stands by its Cruelty-free claim and complies with the applicable legal requirements concerning animal testing for cosmetic products. Most Louis Widmer products qualify for the Vegan claim. Some contain ingredients such as beeswax or chitosan and therefore do not qualify. Products displaying the 0% Solid Microplastic claim contain no intentionally added solid synthetic polymer microparticles. Louis Widmer also reviews liquid polymers individually and seeks to reduce those that may be of environmental concern, where technically feasible and without compromising product quality. Louis Widmer continuously develops its formulations in line with current scientific knowledge and applicable regulatory requirements, considering environmental aspects from the product development stage. In this way, Louis Widmer combines scientifically substantiated development, responsible ingredient selection and transparent communication with consumers.
2. Packaging
Louis Widmer designs its packaging with recyclability in mind, recognising that design for recyclability is an important element of a circular economy. Approximately 95% of our product packaging is already fully recyclable. We are continuously working to improve the recyclability of the remaining packaging components. Further measures include increasing the use of mono-material packaging to facilitate collection, sorting and recycling, increasing the use of recycled materials where technically feasible, and reducing the amount of packaging material used, for example through optimised tube caps or thinner packaging walls.
Where appropriate and permitted by applicable legislation, product information is also made available in digital format. Secondary packaging remains fully recyclable. Where applicable, the recyclability of packaging components and the use of FSC-certified paper or cardboard are indicated on the packaging by the relevant symbols. Packaging is continuously reviewed and further developed in line with evolving sustainability objectives, technological progress and applicable regulatory requirements.
3. Reducing Environmental Impact
Louis Widmer combines high quality standards with a commitment to environmental responsibility at its Swiss production site. The company continuously works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiency is improved through modern heating and cooling technologies as well as energy-efficient industrial processes. Louis Widmer aims to achieve CO₂-neutral production by 2029. Conventional lighting is being progressively replaced by LED technology across all locations. This has already resulted in a substantial reduction in electricity consumption for lighting at the company's head office.
“For me, Inclusive Business Excellence means taking responsibility - each and every one of us. Appreciation, openness and respect are included in our values as a family-run company just like equal opportunities and a multicultural environment. With each other, for each other - together we care.”
4. Social Responsibility
Louis Widmer assumes responsibility for people and the environment. The strategic values and targets are reflected in its social commitment. Responsibility toward employees forms the basis for the guiding principle “Inclusive Business Excellence”. Louis Widmer thus supports and integrates disabled persons, unemployed persons sent by job centers and job seekers over 50 to its best ability.
5. Global Diversity
Louis Widmer supports and promotes global diversity. This diversity facilitates openness, understanding, creativity and innovation.
Louis Widmer's corporate and brand culture respects individual skills and ways of life. Fairness is regarded as a basic principle. Cultural differences enable Louis Widmer to engage in an exciting learning and development process. The products are produced at the head office in Schlieren by people from over 11 countries – for people around the world.
6. Partnership: Look Good Feel Better
One matter very close to our heart is our commitment to the partnership with the "Look Good Feel Better" organisation, which we support with great conviction since many years, not only financially but also with our high-quality dermatological skin care products. The "Look Good Feel Better" foundation organises free workshops for people with cancer throughout Switzerland. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants in the workshops learn how to cope better with the visible consequences of their treatment thanks to make-up and skin care tips, as well as recommendations on headwear. The workshops strengthen both the self-confidence and the courage to face life of those affected.
Our highly effective dermatological skin care products protect and care for the skin of cancer patients and support their well-being throughout their therapy. Annemarie Widmer, our owner and CEO, has been a member of the Foundation Board since 2008 and also supports this partnership with a great deal of personal commitment.
6. Partnership: ECOALF
Louis Widmer has been an official partner of the ECOALF Foundation since 2022 and supports its activities through financial contributions to initiatives and upcycling projects aimed at removing waste, particularly plastic waste, from the Mediterranean Sea.
The non-profit organisation is committed to reducing the impact of plastic pollution on the marine environment. Collected plastic waste is recovered and further processed using scientific and technological methods.
As a partner of the ECOALF Foundation, Louis Widmer supports its efforts to protect marine ecosystems and helps promote awareness of marine litter, its environmental impacts, and the importance of recycling and the circular economy in addressing these challenges.
